Guyana Citizens? Initiative (GCI), an entity registered under the Friendly Society Act, implemented Rainwater Technology Projects at four sites in the Mocha, Arcadia and Caneville communities on the East Bank of Demerara, Guyana. This building houses three inter-dependent families and includes more than 10 children. This site is connected to GWI, and the GWI bill is approximately G$12,000 per year with an additional G$8,000 for bottled water. These projects, which began in October 2006 were designed to bring clean water to these communities and was centered on meeting seven of eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).GCI provided G$1, 847,835 while the Mocha Arcadia Barnwell Motivators and Action Committee made in-kind contributions. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and Ecoclubs United provided technical and monitoring support to the project.Guyana Citizens? Initiative (GCI) is a non-partisan, not-for-profit, Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) that focuses on water and sanitation in the context of poverty alleviation consistent with the expectations of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).GCI?s overarching goal in these two areas, water and sanitation,Cheap NFL Jerseys China, is to develop civil society?s capacity to hold government and others accountable for laws and policies affecting poverty.During the second half of 2006, GCI?s work plan had three primary objectives, one of which is to support and promote the engagement of communities in their efforts to develop strategies to achieve sustainable livelihoods in conditions of environmental safety. The GCI six-month work plan encompassed eleven activities covering these three goals. The overall goal is to contribute to poverty alleviation within the framework of the Millennium Development Goals relating to Water and Sanitation.GOALS WORK ACTIVITIES AND PLANSAccording to GCI representative Eric Phillips, the first goal in the six-month plan is to develop civil society capacity, and revitalise Civil Society?s participation in the Poverty Reduction Strategic Plan (PRSP).GCI will develop civil society?s capacity to hold government and other agencies accountable for laws and policies affecting poverty. He stated that to do this, the entity would engage PRSP Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) process owners to ensure local community based inputs are incorporated in planning process. This is only possible after legitimacy is established by implementing successful projects in communities and strong relationships are established.GCI will also engage in community education programmes to nurture the formation of their Water Users Associations. They will also collaborate with partners internationally, regionally and nationally, develop relationships with all donors, NGOs and other groups involved in water, sanitation and MDG issues.Other activities will include performing research activities to understand what approaches are successfully being used in other countries, and to establish relationships with Water & Sanitation NGOs and Donors.Another plan is to work in partnership with communities to implement rainwater harvesting technologies to provide those in need with relief, provide training and courses to communities to ensure sustainability of activities implemented, and finding partners in the private sector, civil society and donor communities to support communities in their self-recovery efforts.Another goal of the entity is to strengthen community awareness on environmental issues and also making stronger community awareness of the environment by effective popular education programmes and campaigns.Activities to make this a reality will come in the form of promoting the spirit of volunteerism and community involvement in every stage of the project, inclusive of conceptualization, planning,Cheap Authentic Jerseys, implementation, monitoring, evaluation,Wholesale Hockey Jerseys 2018, advocacy and decision making.Added to that, GCI will create Water & Sanitation Fun Fact programmes that can be established as a standard for educating both the literate and non-literate population.Working in partnership with GWI and the Private Sector to educate the Nation and individual communities on water and sanitation issues is also listed among a series of activities planned. The entity will participate in their program covering Number 56 Village to Molson Creek (23 schools, numerous churches,Wholesale Jerseys USA, mosques, and temples). They will promote Aqua Life as a very cheap way of purifying water for drinking purposes and work to create a framework that is acceptable to all stakeholders (government included) in the establishment of Community Water Users.THE HOUSEHOLD WATER TECHNOLOGY PROJECTOne of GCI?s primary goals is to establish that “water is a fundamental right of all Guyanese”. They feel that there is a fundamental lack of a coherent national development strategy in Guyana, which indicates the vital role water, will play in the development process and especially how poverty is alleviated and how Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are to be met. With GCI being the only true “water and sanitation NGO in Guyana”, the responsibility for the articulation of these issues lies squarely on their shoulders.Their sources noted that water is involved in seven of the eight MDGs to which the government is committed, yet there is no discernible strategy to achieve them.Having access to safe and sufficient water and sanitation are now recognized as basic human rights. Being able to wash one?s hands and drink clean water can have a major impact on family hygiene and health. Women play an especially important role in this process. Because people who are poor are most likely to get sick, and ill health perpetuates poverty, it triggers a vicious cycle that hampers economic and social developmentThe GCI project entailed providing very needy families in the Mocha area (East Bank Demerara) with clean drinking water using the technique of rainwater harvesting and water purification (sodium hypochlorite). The Partners are the Guyana Citizens Initiative (GCI) and the Mocha Arcadia Barnwell Motivators and Action Committee.Through management training,Wholesale Jerseys China, a comprehensive education program in the schools and the community, significant contributions from the community and the formation of a Community Water & Sanitation Users Association, poverty, social inequality, public health and sanitation issues are said to be addressed in a sustainable manner. The water purification process will also create a few jobs and the overall project will cover several dimensions of PRSP and MDG goals. The Mocha community although a few miles from Georgetown, is a very depressed area with very vulnerable families. A vast majority of the families, many led by females, do not have access to potable water. GWI provides water to some homes.According to sources this water is often brown and undrinkable and expensive. The residents are billed on an estimated basis for water that is intermittent and unhealthy. Residents have to resort to the nearby trenches that drain the nearby sugar plantation and Canal # 3 which is dark coloured and heavily polluted with feces from make-shift latrines,NFL Jerseys Outlet, garbage and other pollutants. The communities are very poor and cannot afford to purchase drinking water in some cases much less have water for bathing and other social uses. There are many elderly and disabled in the community.Water is essential to life and in this community the single most ever-present need is water. The availability of water of any kind is a driving need for this community and unfortunately the use of unsafe water and lack of adequate sanitation facilities/services further exacerbates the issue since their health is threatened. In this project, GCI is working with the Mocha Arcadia Barnwell Motivators and Action Committee, a group that is active in an area that covers 5,000 homes, to rally this poverty stricken community around a basic need to have water on a daily basis.
